Diagnosis of whiplash

Whiplash is difficult to diagnose because X-rays and other imaging studies can’t identify whiplash-injuries. Diagnosis of whiplash is based on observation of the patents symptoms, medical history, physical examination, and neurological studies to determine whether the spine has been injured. Whiplash cannot be seen on an MRI scan, CT scan or X-ray, although an X-ray is taken if there is suspicion of fracture or dislocation of the cervical spine.

However, nowadays whiplash is a well documented occurrence and whiplash-type injuries have been seen in many studies This means that whiplash-associated disorders are taken more seriously by doctors and medical professionals and it is much easier to claim compensation.

If you are involved in a car accident and you suspect that you may be suffering from whiplash, you should visit a GP or Accident and Emergency. You will then be asked of any symptoms that you are suffering, the circumstances of the accident and you will undergo a physical examination. If Doctors suspect a neck fracture, an X-ray will be carries out immediately.
