£100,000 Compensation for Widow of Mesothelioma Victim

A woman who lost her husband to the asbestos-related disease, mesothelioma was awarded £100,000 in compensation.

Mesothelioma is a deadly form of cancer which commonly affects the lungs of people exposed to asbestos. The man was diagnosed with mesothelioma when he underwent tests at hospital after developing breathing problems, a nagging cough and pain under his ribs.

The victim was an elderly man whom had previously provided care for his wife, undertaking such tasks as housework, shopping and gardening. As his condition worsened he became increasingly dependent upon family members.

Claiming compensation for Mesothelioma

For the duration of his working life he worked for a single employer, a rail company. Throughout his time working for this rail company he held several roles. One of these roles was as an engine cleaner early in his career, cleaning asbestos from the engines and boilers of steam trains, then he became a fireman and eventually a driver. Asbestos was used extensively as lagging in the steam trains and the victim was exposed to it on a daily basis as it would blow around the cabs when he was working.

The claimant instructed solicitors to assist him in making a personal injury claim against his former employer.

Sadly he passed away before the claim could be concluded. The case was successful however and £100,000 compensation was awarded to his widow.

The amount of compensation awarded took into account the pain and suffering caused by her late husband’s illness, funeral expenses, a sum for bereavement damages and care costs.
